Stroll Seven Oaks – February 2023

Meet Liz Herrera, Social Director for Highgate at Seven Oaks

Liz is the creative genius behind all the unique and exciting social activities and holiday events that residents of Highgate enjoy throughout the year. We talked to Liz about what’s going on in the Highgate community and about some of the upcoming fun events that are in the works!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I have been planning events since 1995. I spent 20 years working at the Kern County Museum planning children’s activities and workshops. I soon moved on to family summer events and graduated into weddings and corporate event planning. In my free time I enjoy watching movies, being at home, and spending time with friends and family.

What do you enjoy most about being the Social Director for Highgate at Seven Oaks?

I love that I can be as creative as I want to be. I have a passion for event planning, bringing visions to life for others to enjoy and creating memorable moments. Highgate is such a wonderful community and I find joy in making people happy through entertainment, food, arts & crafts, and social involvement. I love getting to see neighbors becoming friends and how the different activities bring everyone together.

What have been some of your favorite Highgate events?

Highgate at Seven Oaks has had so many wonderful events that offer something for everyone. Some of my favorites are “Sundae Funday” with BoBo the Clown, where residents made ice cream sundaes and participated in the magic show, and “Donuts with Dad” – just a day to celebrate the dads in the community – residents came to the Clubhouse on a Saturday morning for donuts, coffee, cartoons, and to spend time with dad. We started spring off with a “Spring Fling Pop Up Shop” out in the park, and “Margarita Monday” at the Highgate Clubhouse is a big hit, because who can’t use a margarita on a Monday! Residents enjoyed this event so much they even got out the karaoke machine. Because the summers are so hot and it’s not always easy cooking outside, we hosted an indoor “Too Hot To BBQ-BBQ.” Summertime comes to an end with “Hot August Nights” in the park, with food, games, and live music. This was a perfect event at which families could enjoy the evening by bringing their chairs, blankets, and ice chests to stay cool. Most of all I enjoy the series of “Afterschool Craft Blasts” that I created as a quick stop by the Clubhouse for students to get a snack and make a craft. The event occurs once a month with different themes and the kids in the community love to get involved with their friends and neighbors.

In Highgate Regents, the active adult community, residents participate in a Social Committee to host their own events, and I provide ideas and help when needed. The social committee does an outstanding job of organizing everything and coming up with some great activities that get everyone involved and connecting with one another. Some of the fun events have included a 4th of July celebration by the pool, Chili Cook Off, Ladies Fashion Show, and a Halloween magic show and costume contest. The year ends with their biggest event of all, the annual New Year’s Eve Bash, which includes a 4-course meal, live music, and dancing.

What are some upcoming activities in 2023 that residents can look forward to?

There are some very fun events for 2023 that I’m excited to share with the residents of Highgate! We will be hosting “Camp Highgate,” a camping experience where residents can experience the joy of camping without leaving the neighborhood. We will be hosting more “Wine & Bites” events, which are intimate evenings of wine tasting with small, paired appetizers. Plans for activities later in the year include outdoor concerts, a comedy show, a superhero breakfast for the kids, more movies in the park, and a giant Easter egg hunt. We are really looking forward to another great year as Highgate at Seven Oaks continues to grow!
